Your writing is yours. Skein keeps it on your device, and in your own account only if you choose to sign in. We never read it, sell it, advertise against it or use it to train AI.
Who we are
Skein is a writing app made by Fallinghippo Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. We are the controller of the personal data described here. You can reach us at skeinwriting@gmail.com.
Using Skein without an account
You can use Skein without signing in. Everything you write — books, notes, boards, settings — is saved in your browser's storage on your own device and is not sent to us. Clearing your browser's site data deletes it, so export a backup (Backup in the app) if it matters to you.
What we hold if you create an account

The legal basis is our contract with you to provide the service you asked for, and our legitimate interest in keeping it secure.
Signing in with Google
If you choose "Continue with Google", Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with Skein. We use them only to create your account, sign you in and show your name in the app. We don't request access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts or any other Google data, we don't share what Google gives us with anyone else, and we never use it for advertising.
Skein's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Emails from us
We'll only send you news, tips and offers about Skein and other Fallinghippo Limited products if you tick the box asking for them — it's never ticked for you, and saying no doesn't affect your account. You can stop them at any time from Settings → Account in Skein, or with the unsubscribe link in any email. The legal basis for these emails is your consent. We'll still send the few service emails your account needs, such as confirming your address or resetting your password.
What we don't do
- We don't read your manuscripts or look inside your account except to fix a problem you've asked us to help with.
- We don't sell or share your data for advertising, and Skein has no ads or third-party tracking.
- We don't use your writing to train AI. Skein has no generative AI at all.
- The spelling and grammar checker runs entirely on your device; your text is never sent anywhere to be checked.

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they use approved safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or standard contractual clauses.
Cookies and storage
Skein uses your browser's local storage to save your work and, if you sign in, to keep you signed in. We don't use advertising or analytics cookies.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and synced work until you delete it or ask us to. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your data from our live systems within 30 days.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, object to or restrict how it's used, and complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). You can export everything yourself at any time from Backup in the app. For anything else, email skeinwriting@gmail.com and we'll reply within a month.
Children
Skein isn't intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly create accounts for them.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
